Moskvich

Moskvich seeds grow one of the most cold-tolerant heirloom tomatoes in the home garden — a compact, early-ripening variety bred to perform where summers are short and cool. Originating from Eastern Siberia, this indeterminate open-pollinated tomato produces clusters of medium-sized, deep red fruits averaging 4 to 6 ounces, with a smooth round shape and rich, balanced flavour that punches well above its modest size. Where other varieties stall in cool weather, Moskvich keeps setting and ripening fruit reliably.

Growing Guide

Moskvich matures in 60 to 65 days from transplant — placing it firmly in the early-season category and making it an excellent choice for gardeners with short growing windows or unpredictable springs. Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost, sowing 6mm (¼ inch) deep in warm, moist seed-starting mix. Germination is best between 21–24°C (70–75°F).

Transplant seedlings outdoors once nighttime temperatures consistently stay above 10°C (50°F). Choose a site with full sun — at least 6 to 8 hours daily. Space plants 60 to 75 cm (24 to 30 inches) apart in rows 90 cm (36 inches) wide to allow good airflow. Although indeterminate in habit, Moskvich tends toward a compact, manageable vine; cage or stake plants early to keep fruit off the soil. Enrich beds with compost before planting and maintain consistent moisture to prevent blossom end rot and cracking. This variety is notably tolerant of cool nights, making it well suited to northern and high-altitude gardens.

Harvest & Use

Fruits are ready to pick when uniformly deep red with a slight give under gentle pressure — typically from midsummer onward, well ahead of later-season varieties. The flavour is sweet, rich, and full-bodied with low acidity, making Moskvich tomatoes excellent eaten fresh off the vine, sliced into salads, or layered onto sandwiches. Their firm flesh and thin but tight skin also hold up well for saucing and roasting, reducing into a thick, flavourful purée with minimal cooking time.

Store ripe tomatoes at room temperature, stem side down, away from direct sun and use within 5 to 7 days for peak flavour. Do not refrigerate — cold temperatures dull the taste and alter the texture. For longer preservation, Moskvich freezes cleanly whole or cooked, and processes beautifully into canned crushed tomatoes or passata.

A dependable, time-tested variety that rewards gardeners who want reliable early harvests without sacrificing the flavour depth of a true heirloom tomato.
